All of us as parents of teenagers have encountered at one time a smart reply from our child. Things like; "what's it to you", "whatever", "who cares", and I am sure you have heard many others. I'll never forget my one teenage son telling me; "you can't tell me what to do", at first it shocked me then I realized there must be some way to deal with a mouthy teen. Here are a few tips to help you deal with mouthy teens.
- Try this tactic first- First you must maintain a positive attitude when talking to your teen. Sometimes this hard to do when you are constantly bombarded with his or her smart mouth. Try to answer them in a normal voice each time they become mouthy. Eventually they will start talking to you with respect. If this doesn't work, move on to my next tip.
- Discipline is still the best answer- One reason things were different when we were teenagers, is that we respected our parents. If your child has no respect for you then naturally they will not treat you with respect. We were taught to respect our elders, and we did. Why? Because are parents were quick to take away our privileges if we did something wrong. It all accounts for discipline, without it we get no respect and with it we are respected. If you want your teen to treat you with respect without a mouthy answer then start my letting them know you are still in charge. Talk to them and explain to them that you deserve to be treated better and if their attitude continues you will take their privileges will be taken away. The next time they try mouthing off to you, the first thing I would do is have their cell phone temporarily disconnected. This will get their attention right away and show that you mean business.
- Understanding your teenager can go a long way- You need to establish some form of communication with your teenager. You need to listen to them and try to understand their world, and how they tick inside. If they see that you are taking an interested in their lives then you will start to see a gradual change in them. This is a big step for you gaining their respect. Once they start to respect you start by showing them your appreciation by giving them some added rope, such as going to activities with their friends. You should notice that they can talk to you like a normal person once again.
