Flood gates are special gates that are designed to control the flow of water in a stream, river, reservoir or levee system, they are not fixed gates but adjustable with the ability to be lowered and raised. They can be designed for a number of reasons with the ability to perform different tasks. They may be designed to completely stop the flow of water as part of a storm surge or levee system. Sometimes they are designed to change the height of the spillway crest in dams. One of the most common reasons they are used is to help adjust the flow rate of water in canals and sluices. Flood gates are also known as Crest Gates (although this term is not often associated with them); they are called this because most of them work by controlling the elevation of the waters surface by routing it or storing it.

There are many different types of flood gates; I will detail a couple of them below:

Crest

Bulkhead Gates

These types are vertical walls, the sections are re-movable or movable, the movable sections have the ability to be raised up, this allows water to pass underneath. The ones with removable parts typically allow the water to flow over the top. In large systems it is not uncommon for the gates to slide sideways.

Hinged Crest Gates

These gates are wall sections with the capability of rotating from the horizontal position to the vertical position in turn varying the dam's height. Hydraulics are generally used to control these, although there are some that are powered by the water (passive).
